PONY Baseball member Sean Gibson and Brent Stevens, the great-grandsons of Negro League Baseball player Josh Gibson and Babe Ruth respectively, met in 2004 and instantly connected given the significance of their great-grandfathers in the home run and baseball world. Over time, they started sharing thoughts about the possible "what-if" had Josh and Babe had the chance to meet and interact together, since there is no known record of these two baseball greats having ever crossed paths in person. Those conversations led to this painting, by renowned artist Bill Purdom, which reflects a hypothetical interaction between these two home run superstars.
You can almost imagine Babe and young Josh (who was 16 years younger than Babe) meeting during a barnstorming game at Yankee Stadium. As depicted in this piece, Babe seems to be sharing some of his experiences with Josh, prior to the start of the game. As other players are warming up, Babe offers a few points about his game and hitting to the Negro League superstar. Just imagine the conversation and stories that these home runs great would share!
Two versions of the painting, "Josh & The Babe" - Legends of Their Leagues No. 1, are available: a limited edition, 18" x 24" giclee on superior, heavyweight satin canvas for $295/piece (strictly limited to 300 pieces); and, an open edition, 8" x 10" museum print on 200-year archival paper for $49.95. Each print comes with a Certificate of Authenticity, as well as an article -- "The Story Behind Josh & The Babe" -- by Mr. Gibson and Mr. Stevens.
A portion of the profits from sale of these prints will go to the Josh Gibson Foundation.
